Summer Bootcamps

Focus on what's important to you

During the Summer we often have some time to focus on the little bits that need work with our dogs but don't have the time to commit to a full course. Our Summer Bootcamps will focus on single topics per session with an emphasis on a specific aspect of that topic, different each time.

Focused Single-Topic Training

Leash Walking, Recall and Self Control Training

Our Summer Bootcamps are stand-alone sessions focusing on one of three main topics each session: recall; leash walking; or self control. Within each of these topics are lots of areas to focus on and each bootcamp will specialise on one of these areas which will be defined before hand and updated below.

Each session is 1.5 hours long and run in Monread Park in Naas at our usual training spot. Session times are 10:15am - 11:45am. There will be chill out and reset breaks throughout the session so that we make the most of it and no one gets over-tired or frustrated with anything.  All of the exercises are designed to be engaging and fun for your dog. As it is a longer session, please make sure to bring both water and tasty treats for your dog, ideally something like plain roast chicken, turkey or other meats if your dog's stomach is ok with those. Mix in some veggies such as diced carrots and some of their dry kibble to the mix.

These sessions are tailored to those who have done training with us before but are also open to other dog-handler teams after an initial check with one of our trainers. Unfortunately these sessions are not suitable for dogs who are currently showing reactivity towards dogs or people. If you are unsure, please get in touch to discuss.

Leash Walking Bootcamp

Leash walking, along with recall, is one of the hardest things to build up to reliability with your dog. Not because it is a difficult topic, rather it is one of those behaviours that we need to work every single time it's asked of your dog. This means that it is not just a matter of practising a bit in the garden but in all contexts that you need it such as around lots of people, past dogs, near food, in tight spaces, around noises and smells, and so on.

In the Leash Walking Bootcamps we focus on making sure the foundations are solid in every session and then we practice one main aspect that needs focus such as: walking past dogs and getting nice hellos when allowed; walking past food either dropped on the floor or at head height as you walk by coffee shop tables; or even navigating very tight spaces and using verbal cues to help your dog through the best way for both of you.

To join this group your dog must have all vaccinations up to date, including kennel cough, and be using a two-point harness.  This harness should not be a type that gets tighter on your dog or is in any other way punitive. Read the link above for guidance.

Next Session: 21/06 10:15am - focus on walking past dogs & polite greetings.

Recall Bootcamp

Recall is a big topic. It is one thing to come back when called in the back garden or across the kitchen, it is another completely to come back when called away from playing with a friend, when your dog has found something tasty, or even from a distressing situation when they get lost or disoriented. The foundations of recall are not difficult but applying them and making them robust in everyday situations can be.

In these stand alone sessions we will check over the fundamentals of your recall and then build up around everyday distractions, focusing on a different one each session throughout the Summer. These focused topics include: recall away from something tasty/fun; recall away from other dogs; and starting emergency recalls.

To join this group your dog must have all vaccinations in place, including kennel cough. You will need to have your dog on a comfortable harness, no no-pull harnesses or other harnesses that get tighter or are punitive. You will need a long-line,  you can have a look at our discussion on harnesses and leashes to see what is most suitable.

Unfortunately this session is not suitable for dogs currently showing reactivity towards dogs or people unless advised by one of our trainers.

Next session: 28th June, 10:15am - focus on recall from interesting objects/toys/food.
